In collaboration with the Media Career Development Network, the US Consulate General in Lagos is funding a one-year journalism capacity-building initiative for aspiring Nigerian journalists.
The program, known as the Bi-Monthly Journalism Clinic, is intended for reporters who have less than five years of experience.
It seeks to give aspiring journalists the essential abilities in digital tools, data-driven investigative journalism, and ethical reporting techniques.
The program will include in-depth sessions in Lagos, covering important subjects including financial journalism, public health reporting, accountability and openness in governance, and the responsible use of anonymous sources, the organizers said in a statement on Friday.
The workshop will also look at how journalists may use social media to get public data and generate powerful stories.
The US government’s commitment to enhancing media capability in Nigeria is reflected in the training, according to Julie McKay, public affairs officer at the US Consulate, who spoke about the project.
Freedom of the press and an independent, professional, and responsive media are essential components of any democracy.
“By providing timely and accurate information, journalists give citizens a voice allowing them to engage in important dialogue and hold leaders accountable,” McKay stated.
Executive Director of the Media Career Development Network, Lekan Otufodunrin, said about 150 journalists are expected to benefit from the training.
“Participants will gain advanced reporting skills that enhance their ability to inform, educate, and hold leaders accountable,” Otufodunrin said.
The programme also includes mentorship opportunities with senior journalists and subject matter experts.
