Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, or RCCG, has reminded Nigerians, especially those in the legal profession, that human life and achievements are supported entirely by God’s mercy rather than by one’s own intelligence or hard work.
Speaking on Sunday at the RCCG national headquarters, Throne of Grace Parish, Ebute-Metta, during the September Thanksgiving and prayer service with the theme “Divine Mercy,” Adeboye underlined that simply existing is evidence of God’s mercy.
God’s grace is the reason we are still here today. He said, “You will realize that you are alive not because you are smart but because of the Lord’s mercy when you think about the different ways a fellow could die.”
To give an example, he related a story from his time in college when, even though he was a math tutor and had studied hard for the test, he abruptly lost his memory after reading all eight questions.
A particular hand held me in place as I was ready to leave the hallway. The answers suddenly became obvious. I asked the examiner to mark any five of the eight questions I had answered. God’s mercy was that, Adeboye remembered.
But the cleric emphasized that God’s mercy is not unconditional. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy,” he said, quoting scripture.
He cautioned that those who refuse to extend mercy could face dire repercussions.
“The unmerciful face trouble.” Devastation without a remedy could be the outcome. He warned, “God’s patience is not limitless; there comes a time when He says enough is enough.”
Following the service, Pastor Dele Balogun, Special Assistant to the General Overseer on Administration, spoke to reporters and urged attorneys to practice justice and equity.
