The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the Nigerian Senate to immediately reinstate Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and allow her to resume her legislative duties.
This was included in a statement on Tuesday. SERAP stated that the Kogi Central lawmaker’s suspension, which began in March, has ended and should not be extended under any circumstances. There is no law in Nigeria that prevents her from returning to her legislative duties while the case(s) are heard and determined in court. “This travesty of justice must end,” it stated.
The group charged that the Senate was preventing Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return by citing ongoing legal proceedings.
It emphasized that the senator, who had officially informed the Clerk of the National Assembly of her intention to resume on September 4, must be permitted to return to the chamber, warning that such an action would violate the rule of law. For the length of the suspension, the rights group also demanded that all of her unpaid salaries and benefits be paid immediately.
