The Presidency responds to Dino Melaye, stating that basic economic knowledge is required.

The presidency has fired back at former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye, urging him to familiarize himself with the basics of economics.

On Monday, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications took a swipe at the ex-lawmaker for his remarks on Nigeria’s public debt.

Melaye had previously stated that the Nigerian government, led by Tinubu, may later borrow from Opay or Moniepoint.

Dare responded by calling Melaye’s remarks deceptive and based more on drama than economics.

Dare claimed that Melaye had once again compromised substance for show after implying on TV that Nigeria would soon take a loan from Moniepoint and OPay.

“You should familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of economics,” he advised. The presidential aide claims that although such remarks might be amusing, they do not accurately depict the state of the country’s finances.

According to Dare, Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio is still only moderate at 40–45%, far lower than South Africa’s 70% or Ghana’s 90%+.
