The Chartered Institute of Social Work Practitioners of Nigeria (CISWPN) expressed significant concern over the rising problems of irregular migration and human trafficking, calling them pressing social issues with national consequences. Speaking at the 16th International Conference on Social Work in Enugu, National President Prof. Oluwayemisi Obashoro-John stated that the conference aims to find practical solutions to these issues and youth vulnerability. Prof. Obashoro-John explained that CISWPN, chartered in 2022 and now having over 15,000 members, actively collaborates with international partners like USAID and UKAID on projects concerning women’s rights and vulnerable groups, including fistula repair and anti-female genital mutilation campaigns. She stressed that irregular migration is a profound social problem, not just economic, rooted in issues of dignity, justice, and human rights, driven by young people feeling hopeless or deprived of opportunities at home. She called for greater collaboration with agencies like NAPTIP and urged the government to create sustainable domestic opportunities, emphasizing that making things work at home is the real solution, as the grass only appears greener elsewhere.
