During the present house-to-house immunization drive, four households in Gwiwa Tungar Dole, Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto State, have refused to let their children take the oral polio vaccine.
The families, including those of Bashir Muhammad of Gwiwa Gurgawo and Alhaji Buban Illela Mai Engine, rejected the immunizations, citing ongoing medical treatments abroad.
On Monday, however, Magajin Lugga Alhaji Yusuf Umar Lagaza, a local community leader, rejected these allegations as “flimsy excuses.”
The immunization crew would return to the homes in a further effort to convince them to comply, he promised.
The goal of the vaccine campaign, which is supported by UNICEF, the Sokoto State administration, and other development partners, is complete immunization coverage, particularly in regions that have historically had low compliance rates.
Lagaza noted that the exercise had made great strides and that communities such as Gwiwa Bela and Gwiwa Tungar Dole had a good turnout. He called for more community support and stated that teams are now covering regions such as Gwiwa Gurgawo and Gwiwa Garkar Lagaza.
Additionally, he counseled parents to put their kids’ health first by making sure they get the polio vaccine and by using the other essential health services available at certain locations.
The period of the vaccination campaign was April 26–29. It
