Rival factions are vying for control of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Zamfara State, causing a leadership crisis.
One group, led by Malam Mohammed Mainasara, claimed that the party’s national leadership had given them the authority to supervise the state congress’s operations.
According to Mainasara, who identified himself as the Congress Committee Chairman, the committee carried out the exercise successfully, resulting in the creation of a new State Executive Committee through a stakeholder-endorsed consensus arrangement.
He said that Ahmad Hashim was chosen as Secretary and Malam Shehu Gulubba as State Chairman. Other officials include Maryam Abdullahi as the Women’s Leader and Jafafar Aliyu as the Youth Leader.
Gulubba promised to fortify the party and foster unity throughout the state in his victory address, emphasizing that his leadership will put an emphasis on internal cohesiveness and grassroots growth.
Kabiru Garba Gusau, the leader of a breakaway group, insisted that he was still the party’s rightful chairman in Zamfara and rejected the congress’s results.
Gusau called the development inflammatory, claiming that some people were supporting the opposition side in an effort to undermine the party for political purposes.
According to him, a legitimate congress ought to represent a consensus among all parties involved.
Additionally, the faction claimed to have submitted the issue for intervention to security organizations, such as the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police.
Gusau further declared that members who took part in the contentious congress would be suspended and dismissed, claiming that he had the constitutional right to do so as the recognized chairman.
