Omoyele Sowore, an activist and presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, has called on the federal government to adopt the same strict procedures employed against kidnappers’ hideouts to the opulent homes of public officials and politicians who are accused of embezzling public monies.
Sowore claimed that public treasury stealing is a serious type of kidnapping that denies millions of Nigerians access to basic amenities in a statement he made on his X handle on Tuesday.
He stated that all criminals should be treated similarly if the government feels that anything obtained or used for illegal conduct should be destroyed right away.
“There is no justification for restricting house demolition to kidnappers alone.”
“Public treasury looting is a form of kidnapping too; it kidnaps healthcare, education, jobs, infrastructure, and the future of millions of Nigerians,” he stated. “If the government truly believes that property acquired through or used for criminal activity should be destroyed immediately, then the same principle must apply to politicians.”
“Public officials and other powerful individuals who steal public funds to build mansions and acquire vast assets should have their mansion demolished,” the Sahara Reporters publisher continued. Sowore’s remarks are in response to the Oyo State Government’s demolition of a building in Ibadan that was allegedly used as a hideout by kidnappers who abducted Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John Paul, the sister of former Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu and her 12-year-old twin sons.”
Less than 48 hours after security personnel rescued the victims, the building in the Lako Community area of Oluyole Local Government Area was demolished.
The state government characterized the measure as a component of its zero-tolerance approach to criminal activity.
