Veteran Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has continued to respond to reports that Mr. Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress’s (NDC) presidential candidate, is seeking N5 billion in damages for allegedly defamatory remarks.
Okonkwo made fun of the reported lawsuit in a statement on X on Wednesday, implying that Obi was looking for money for political campaigns.
The former spokesman for Obi’s campaign asserted that instead of using what he called extortion, Obi should ask him directly if he needed money for political endeavours.
“I’ve been informed that the hypocrite Peter Obi and his attorneys are circulating a letter on the internet demanding that I give him N5 billion. Hahaha!
If Peter Obi needs money to run for office, he should ask me in private rather than through extortion, and I will assist him. I paid for my airline tickets and made hotel reservations for some of our campaigns when I served as his spokesperson, Okonkwo said.
Okonkwo further claimed that while serving as Obi’s spokesperson, he personally paid for certain costs, such as airfare and lodging for campaign-related activities.
Although he had not yet read the letter, the actor-turned-politician cautioned that any legal action might force him to reveal information he learned while acting as Obi’s spokesperson.
He claimed that he had refrained from disclosing private information out of principle, but he hinted that if the case went to court, this might change.
In addition, he insisted that he was ready to reply after reading the letter and challenged Obi and his legal team to continue the case.
Okonkwo promised to read the demand letter and then formally reply.
