In an effort to increase security and public safety, the Rivers State Police Command said it would start enforcing rules against cars with covered, disguised, defaced, unapproved, or missing registration number plates throughout the state.
In a statement released on Monday, the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, said that the exercise is in accordance with an order from Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the Inspector-General of Police.
According to her, the program aims to prevent people from using wrongly displayed license plates to conceal their identity, hence reducing criminal activity.
CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, will oversee the enforcement operation, which will begin on June 15, 2026.
All Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers have been instructed to “start immediate enforcement of the directive and ensure full compliance within their respective Areas of Responsibility” as part of the exercise.
Vehicles discovered to be in breach of the directive would be seized, the Command said, and those who violate it run the danger of being prosecuted under current legislation.
In order to prevent arrest, car confiscation, or prosecution, drivers were also urged to “ensure that their registration number plates are properly affixed, clearly visible, and free from any form of obstruction or alteration.”
Officers participating in the operation have been warned by CP Adepoju not to engage in any misbehavior, emphasizing that the exercise must be conducted legally and professionally.
“Any officer found engaging in unprofessional conduct or extortion will face strict disciplinary action,” he said, emphasizing that the operation should not be used to harass, threaten, or extort members of the public.
The Police Command reiterated its dedication to safeguarding people and property while taking aggressive steps to improve security in Rivers State.
