In order to promote greater irrigation infrastructure and participatory water resource management across the country, President Bola Tinubu on Monday proclaimed a national emergency on food security.
The announcement was made by Tinubu in Abuja during the commencement of the 6th African Regional Conference on Irrigation and Drainage.

The conference’s topic, “Tackling Irrigation Development and Water Management Crisis in Africa,” he said, was a clear call to action for resilient economies and sustainable agriculture.
“Africa still faces significant obstacles in realizing its irrigation potential because of poor infrastructure, budgetary limitations, climate change, and governance problems.
“This conference provides an essential forum for us to jointly map out a course for the future,” he stated.

Tinubu noted that the country possessed more than 3.1 million hectares of irrigable land centered around significant river basins such as the Niger and Benue.
Prof. Joseph Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, stated in his remarks that the government has finished a number of historic projects as part of the Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria project.
He declared that the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria initiative, which would replace it, would fill in the gaps and maximize the water resources’ economic worth to promote food security.
