A non-governmental organization called Shaping African Women in STEM has started a countrywide campaign to address Nigeria’s low female participation rate in STEM fields.
Samuel Ogunsola founded SWIS Africa, an initiative aimed at increasing women’s participation that “seeks to bridge the persistent gender gap in STEM fields by addressing challenges such as limited access to mentorship, career guidance, and professional networks faced by many young women” in collaboration with Top100 Future African Leaders.
In a statement released in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, Ogunsola, the organization’s co-founder and executive director, said that SWIS Africa has chosen 44 female final-year university students from all throughout the nation for its flagship SWIS EmpowHER Program.
Speaking at the May 2, 2026, onboarding session, Ogunsola stated, “The SWIS EmpowHER Programme was designed to support the transition of the female university students from higher education into careers in academia, industry, and entrepreneurship.”

The chosen individuals, who come from a variety of STEM fields, will go through a rigorous eight-week mentorship program after organized training. Each participant will be connected with seasoned professionals during the mentorship program in order to obtain career guidance and useful insights.
At the program’s final project presentation, participants will be expected to show that they have creative solutions and are prepared to make significant contributions to their respective professions.
The selection procedure was fiercely difficult, according to the co-founder, who also mentioned that each participant was given a spot based only on merit.
He exhorted the recipients to take full advantage of the opportunity by forming networks, learning pertinent skills, and establishing themselves as social change agents.
He claims that the program, which highlights the significance of youth-led interventions in advancing gender equality, economic inclusion, and sustainable development, is supported by the European Union in collaboration with Global Youth Mobilization through the Youth Empowerment Fund.
“Participants will become part of an alumni network designed to encourage continuous collaboration, mentorship, and long-term professional growth beyond the program,” stated SWIS Africa.
