Osun State House of Assembly member Adewumi Adeyemi blamed security failures for the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State, emphasizing that the incident necessitates an urgent review of Nigeria’s security strategy.
The attack, which occurred late Sunday night at Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, saw gunmen kill the Vice Principal, Malami Hassan Yakubu, and abduct the students.
Reacting on Wednesday, Adeyemi asserted that the abduction reveals ongoing weaknesses in intelligence gathering, preventive measures, and coordination among security agencies meant to protect vulnerable communities.
He said the incident forces the nation to ask difficult questions, calling it “another painful reminder of how fragile the safety of the Nigerian child has become.” He added that schools, meant to be safe, are “once again violated by gunmen who operate with troubling ease.”
Adeyemi stated that the attacks reflect deep-seated structural problems in Nigeria’s security system, including intelligence gaps, weak preventive systems, slow response times, poor coordination, and unclear command lines.
He urged the government to overhaul security operations by strengthening internal systems, better equipping agencies, and establishing clear mandates for greater efficiency. He added that the political leadership must prioritize the lives and welfare of the people.
Adeyemi also called for authorities to prioritize school safety and implement early-warning mechanisms within communities to prevent future tragedies.
