A lawyer has stated that Professor Joash Amupitan, the newly appointed INEC Chairman, cannot claim ignorance of the law.

Barrister Chidi Onah has stated that Professor Joash Amupitan, the incoming Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), cannot claim ignorance of the law.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Onah emphasized that, as a law professor, Amupitan is expected to operate strictly within legal boundaries and uphold high ethical standards in his role.

The comment follows the National Council of State’s approval of Amupitan’s nomination to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as INEC Chairman, a nomination presented by President Bola Tinubu, according to his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.

“Professor Amupitan is a lawyer; he knows the law and is bound to operate by it. He cannot excuse himself for not knowing the law, nor should he have moral reasons not to do what is right,” Onah said.

He further highlighted Amupitan’s extensive academic and administrative experience, noting his previous roles as Deputy Vice Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, and Chairman of a university governing council, which demonstrate his capacity to manage people and resources effectively.

Onah expressed hope that Amupitan’s appointment will bring positive reforms to Nigeria’s electoral system, given his expertise in legal and institutional administration.

“Having served as Deputy Vice Chancellor, he has proven his ability as a manager and administrator,” he added.
