New INEC Chairman must resist political pressure – Nwagwu

Public accountability and democratic reforms advocate, Ezenwa Nwagwu, has called on the newly nominated Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Joash Ojo-Amupitan, to resist political pressure and effectively manage various interests to restore credibility to the electoral process.

Nwagwu made the appeal on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television.

He also urged the Senate to carry out a transparent and thorough screening of Prof Amupitan, noting that only strong, credible, and independent leadership can restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.

“The president has made the nomination, but the nominee still needs to be profiled by the secret police and then presented to the Council of State.

“That oversight process should be more transparent. I’m concerned that we always hear the Council of State ‘unanimously approved.’ It would be better if we knew whether there were votes or dissenting opinions,” he said.

He added that the Senate committees on intelligence, electoral matters, and anti-corruption must thoroughly engage the nominee instead of merely endorsing him.
