A lawyer and public affairs analyst, Maxwell Opara, asserted that no law in Nigeria prohibits a lawyer from protesting against injustice.
Opara made this declaration during an interview on the Arise Television program, ‘Prime Time’, a statement monitored by BASEMEDIA.
His comments were in response to the recent arrest and remand of Aloy Ejimakor, a lawyer representing the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, for taking part in a demonstration demanding Kanu’s release.
He specifically stated, “There is no law that says a lawyer cannot protest against injustice or when the right of his client is being violated.”
Opara further argued that even if such a law existed, it would not be valid because the constitution supersedes any law that contravenes its provisions.
He clarified the intent of the protest, saying, “We are not protesting and asking the court to give us judgment. We never protested against any issue that has to do with the court.”
Instead, Opara framed the protest as a reaction to the Executive’s discriminatory actions against Kanu, pointing out that the Federal Government has failed to comply with court judgments that were delivered in Kanu’s favor.
