Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has openly criticized Primate Elijah Ayodele for his recent prophecy about an alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu, describing the statement as attention-seeking and misguided by a “false spirit.”
The prophecy, which warned that “some powerful Nigerians” were plotting to remove Tinubu via a coup between November 2025 and January 2026, was deemed a treasonable offense by Shehu. Writing on X, he argued that in a normal society, the cleric should be treated as an accessory to the fact and required to provide further details, including names.
Shehu urged Nigerians to ignore the cleric and treat his warning with caution and maturity, backing his stance by citing Bible verses that caution against false prophets and speculation.
Furthermore, he accused the public of double standards, suggesting that if a Muslim cleric had made the same claim, the media and security agencies would have immediately demanded his arrest. He concluded by calling Nigeria a nation full of “fake alarms and hypocrisy,” warning citizens against succumbing to baseless or divisive prophecies, as the idea of a coup is not a viable option, even amidst the current state of democracy.
