Between June 2024 and May 2025, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, or NDLEA, arrested 312 people and confiscated 803.672 kg of hard drugs in Akwa Ibom.
Mrs. Obot Bassey, the NDLEA’s Akwa Ibom Commander, made this announcement at a press conference with the topic “The Evidence Is Clear: Invest In Prevention, #Break the Circle” in honor of the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Uyo.
Bassey stated that 38 drug offenders were also charged and found guilty during that time, and that 261 of the 312 suspects detained were men and 51 were women.
According to the commander, the Command has conducted drug misuse prevention education at 91 places throughout the state and treated and rehabilitated 43 male drug addicts.

“We have prosecuted and convicted 38 drug offenders, and we have carried out drug addiction prevention at 91 locations across Akwa Ibom State, and we have rehabilitated 43 males and counselled 179 persons,” Bassey added.
Bassey said that drug abuse was not just a criminal issue but a public health issue, stressing that prevention is a shared responsibility.
She called on parents, educators, religious leaders, and community members to join hands in creating a supportive environment that fosters healthy lifestyles and deters drug use.
The Akwa Ibom drug law enforcement commander said that apart from enforcing the laws, they are also ensuring the protection of the future of Nigerian children.
Bassey reminded the youth that drugs negatively impact people’s health and their well-being in the society.
She urged the government, charities, people, and organizations to make significant investments in programs that prevent drug use.
The commander thanked sister security agencies in the state for their cooperation and collaboration in ensuring a drug-free society, while also praising the state government for its support and requesting logistics vehicles to allow the Command to move across the state’s 31 local government areas.
