Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, who ran for governor in Ogun State under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in 2023, has officially left the NNPP and joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Oguntoyinbo characterized his switch to the PDP as a “thoughtful and responsible action aimed at restoring Nigeria’s unity and optimism.”
This announcement was made on a Monday during a press briefing, where Ajadi formally handed over copies of his resignation letter to reporters, confirming his departure from the NNPP and his new association with the PDP.
In the letter, which was formally addressed to the Ward Chairman, the NNPP Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government, the Ogun State NNPP Chairman, the NNPP Southwest Chairman, and the National Chairman of the party, Ajadi explained that his decision was reached after deep consideration of the nation’s political direction and the necessity of operating within a larger framework capable of enacting genuine national change.
Ajadi stated, “My choice to become a member of the Peoples Democratic Party is both calculated and patriotic.”
He added, “I hold great respect for the NNPP and its principles, but given the current stage of Nigeria’s history, I believe the PDP offers a broader and more robust structure for nationwide reconciliation, empowering young people, and achieving true federalism.”
Ajadi, who was the NNPP gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State during the 2023 general elections after stepping aside as a presidential aspirant to support Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (who later became the party’s presidential candidate), clarified that his exit from the NNPP was not motivated by hostility but by conviction and a fresh sense of purpose.
He said, “There is no ill-will between me and my previous party; I remain thankful for the chance I had to serve under its banner.”
He further noted, “However, as Nigeria continues to face severe economic difficulties, unemployment, and leadership deficits, it is essential for dedicated patriots with similar views to unite and rebuild confidence in government.”
Ajadi remarked that Nigeria is at a critical juncture, emphasizing that the country requires leaders who are attentive to the public.
He expressed, “Nigeria is at a critical point; we require leaders who will heed the voices of the people and act without self-interest. I am confident that my joining the PDP will strengthen the party’s support base at the local level and revive hope among everyday Nigerians.”
PDP officials in the South-west referred to Ajadi’s move as a “welcome addition to the PDP’s democratic collective,” commending his track record of honesty, mobilizing young people, and positive societal influence as qualities that will enhance the party’s vision.
Reaffirming his dedication to serving the nation, Ambassador Ajadi promised to cooperate closely with PDP officials at all levels to champion openness, promote peace-building, and ensure inclusive governance.
He stressed, “This goes beyond mere party politics. It is about reviving the faith of Nigerians in democracy and making certain that our citizens begin to experience the true benefits of effective governance.”
