Anita Job, a businesswoman from Abuja, was sentenced to 27 years in jail by Justice Hauwa Joseph Yilwa of the Federal High Court in Abuja for dealing in illegal substances in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) filed two accusations against the businesswoman, who is a mother of three children, and she was found guilty on Friday of dealing in drugs.
After finding her guilty, Justice Yilwa sentenced her to 12 years in count one and 15 years in count two.
However, the judge ruled that the sentence run concurrently because she was a first-time offender, showed contrition throughout the process, and admitted guilt without wasting the court’s time.
The condemned woman would only serve 15 years of her life behind bars under the terms of the decree.
Even though the conviction was tragic, Justice Yilwa stated that drug crime is a serious problem that should not be ignored due to its effects on the nation and the world.
The fact that the offender was found in possession of 250 kilograms of illegal drugs—a commercial quantity—particularly infuriated the judge.
Given the convict’s commitment to never engage in illegal drug activity again, her attorney, Barrister D. I. Badams, had fervently begged the judge to balance justice with mercy.
