Innocent Ohagwa, who has just taken office as the 17th President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), has identified the absence of digital literacy and technical skills among many tax professionals as a significant obstacle to innovation.
During his investiture in Lagos, Ohagwa, who received his insignia of office, made this statement and stressed the importance of retraining and ongoing education to help narrow the human capital gap.
Many tax professionals, particularly those trained in conventional manual tax systems, lack the digital literacy and technical competence necessary for innovation. This represents a significant barrier to progress.
Practitioners trained in legacy methods may find it challenging to use new tools, including data analytics platforms, robotic process automation (RPA), and cloud-based tax compliance systems.
