The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, of employing undemocratic tactics, including blackmail and intimidation, to compel its members, particularly serving governors, to defect to the ruling party.
The PDP further alleged that President Bola Tinubu’s APC administration was determined to weaken the opposition as part of a broader agenda to establish a one-party state in Nigeria.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, made the claims on Thursday in response to comments by former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad, who said two PDP governors would soon defect to the APC.
Ologunagba stated that most of the recent defections were not voluntary but driven by coercion, inducement, and harassment.
Ahmad had posted on X on October 7 that the governors of Taraba State and another from the North West were set to formally join the APC.
The PDP spokesman, however, maintained that such forced defections would not endure, stressing that the PDP remained stronger than any individual member.
“A political party is not about individuals but the collective. We have more people working for the PDP today, and many others are returning because the party is reorganizing itself.
“The defections you’re seeing now are a result of inducement, coercion, and intimidation, and I can assure you they won’t stand the test of time,” Ologunagba said.
