A contract with Levant Construction Company for the reconstruction of Benin-Sapele-Warri Road (Section 1: Benin–Imasabor) has been terminated by Works Minister David Umahi due to non-performance.
The Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme is being used to build the road.
In his official Facebook page, Umahi stated that he had already voiced his displeasure with Messrs. Levant’s inability to fulfill their contractual obligations.
Due to non-performance, Umahi declared, “I have ordered the termination of the contract with Levant Construction Ltd on the restoration of Benin-Sapele-Warri Road (Section 1: Benin – Imasabor), which is being carried out under the Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme.
“I voiced my unhappiness of Messrs. Levant’s failure and/or neglect to fulfill their contractual obligations during a meeting with the chief executives of GELD Construction Ltd. and SKECC Nigeria Ltd. The contract was terminated because Levant Construction Ltd. did not reply to warnings and notices.
“I have instructed the Permanent Secretary to submit a letter for joint measurement and to officially terminate the position. We would also ask for the APG to be repaid, and if required, the issue will be brought before the EFCC.
Umahi, however, was pleased with the conversation he had with Geld Construction Ltd. and SKECC Nigeria Ltd., who had decided to step up their work on their respective portions of the road project.
“On the other hand, I am pleased with the results of our conversations with SKECC Nigeria Ltd and Geld Construction Ltd, who have committed to accelerating their respective portions of the road project,” he stated.
“I commend the governors of Delta State and Edo State for their interventions on some kilometers of the road project.”
The minister further assured Nigerians that the President Bola Tinubu’s administration was committed to ensure inclusivity of all zones in infrastructure development.
“Regarding allegations of marginalization in road infrastructure development, I want to assure Nigerians that the Renewed Hope administration is committed to inclusive development across the six geo-political zones.
The Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road, the Sokoto-Zamfara-Katsina-Kaduna route, and the Kano Northern Bypass are just a few of the many road projects we are working on in the North.
In actuality, 48% of Mr. President’s four legacy projects are in the South, compared to 52% in the North. I implore Nigerians to view these initiatives as national undertakings that would benefit the whole nation.
According to Umahi, the ministry is still dedicated to its goal of reviving trust in Nigeria’s road system and demonstrating the Renewed Hope administration’s capacity for transformation.
