Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, was granted N100 million in bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja during his trial for allegedly violating national security.
El-Rufai must fulfill a number of strict requirements before being granted bail, according to Justice Joyce Abdulmalik’s order in a bail application on Monday.
One surety in the same amount must be provided by the former governor. The court mandated that the surety deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property at the court registry and dwell in either the Maitama or Asokoro areas of Abuja.
Additionally, the guarantor must be a federal government servant with at least Grade Level 17 and present proof of salary payments for a minimum of three months, verified by a letter from the manager of the bank under the court’s jurisdiction.
In addition, the court mandated that the surety provide an affidavit of means, sign a bail bond, and provide the court registry with a recent passport photo.
In addition, Judge Abdulmalik mandated that the defendant appear at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters by 10 a.m. on the final Friday of each month to sign an attendance register while the case is being decided.
The judge issued a warning that noncompliance would result in the bail being automatically revoked.
El-Rufai was also ordered by the court to provide a letter of attestation from the Kaduna Traditional Council Chairman.
The Nigerian government’s charge against El-Rufai was also given an expedited trial by the court.
El-Rufai must deposit all current foreign passports with the court as part of the bail requirements.
Along with a tax clearance certificate for the previous six months, the court ordered the submission of a verification letter from the surety’s immediate department.
