Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili’s request to change her allegiance to Turkey has been denied by World Athletics.
Ofili was aiming to compete for the European nation in the 2028 Olympics, so this is a major setback.
After examining the request’s circumstances, the World Athletics Nationality Review Panel decided in a document published on Thursday that the Türkiye Athletics Federation’s application would not be accepted.
The tribunal pointed out that approving the proposal would go against important rules governing international sports.
The World Athletics tribunal declared, “The application by the TAF for Favor OFILI (the ‘Athlete’) to transfer allegiance from NGR to TUR is not approved.”
Susanne van Waert, Cydonie Motherskill, and Donna Raynor comprised the panel.
