Goalie Arthur Okonkwo has switched allegiance to represent Nigeria in upcoming games, according to confirmation from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
The first-choice goalkeeper for Wrexham AFC’s transfer from England was authorized on April 6 and is now listed on FIFA’s official website.
Eric Chelle, the coach of the Super Eagles, and the technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation can now choose him.
In the past, Okonkwo earned ten caps for England at the youth level in a variety of age groups. Before earning five more caps for the U-19 squad between 2016 and 2019, he had five appearances at the U-16 and U-17 levels.
After the Arsenal Academy product’s outstanding performances for Wrexham, the US celebrity-backed Championship team, Nigeria had long courted him.
The 24-year-old custodian was instrumental in Wrexham’s ascent, assisting the team in winning three straight promotions from the National League to the Championship. With a 68% save percentage and 40 clean sheets across his three seasons with the team, he is currently among the top 10 goalkeepers for this season.
Alongside Stanley Nwabali, Francis Uzoho of Cyprus, and Maduka Okoye of Udinese Calcio, the London-born goalkeeper is anticipated to compete for a spot in Nigeria’s squad.
