The Commander of the 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, has instructed troops to increase security measures to guarantee the safe harvest of crops for farmers in the Chanchanji area of Takum local government council in Taraba State, following recent attacks that killed several farmers, many of whom were of Tiv origin. This directive was given during his visit to the area on Tuesday, which, according to the Brigade’s acting spokesperson, Lt. Umar Muhammad, is part of Operation Zafin Wuta, an ongoing effort to restore security and public confidence in Southern Taraba, and the Commander also authorized sustained and extended patrols across all vulnerable communities before, during, and after the harvest. Brigadier General Uwa emphasized to his personnel the necessity of maintaining professionalism, vigilance, and respect for human rights, stressing that strong civil-military relations are essential for achieving lasting peace. During the visit, the Brigade Commander also personally led troops on a fighting patrol through key routes and flashpoints leading to farmlands in a show of force intended to discourage the criminal elements behind the attacks, reassure residents, and support the broader clearance and stabilization operations underway in the region. The troops confirmed that the Brigade Commander met with displaced residents and farmers taking shelter at the Chanchanji Market Square, many of whom expressed fear about returning home or to their farmlands despite having had a successful farming season, and several communities, including Ayu, Dooshima, New Gboko, Adu Tyopaa, Peeki, and Tyojande, currently remain deserted following the violence.
