Police look into a widely shared video of a mob attacking a Lagos officer over suspected theft.

The Lagos State Police Command has initiated an investigation into a circulating online video that depicts a uniformed police officer being assaulted by a mob due to accusations of theft, though the exact nature of the alleged crime remains unclear. The footage, which appeared online on Wednesday, shows the distressed officer sitting on the ground with visible blood near his mouth, surrounded by an angry crowd who repeatedly shouted “Ole!” (Thief) in Yoruba while others recorded the scene on their phones. The video captured another officer attempting to push through the crowd to rescue his colleague, but the mob continued their chants in the busy area where the incident took place. Lagos Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the inquiry on X, stating the command is actively working to determine the full circumstances and confirm the officer’s identity, promising updates, while the Nigerian Police Force continues to caution against mob violence and emphasizes that all allegations, whether against civilians or security personnel, must be addressed through official, lawful channels.
