Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has commanded the closure of all state schools by this Friday due to growing security threats.
State Universal Basic Education Board Chairman, Dr. Esrom Toro, made this announcement on Monday while meeting with Local Education Secretaries in Gombe.
The decision comes after security alerts across northern Nigeria, following recent assaults and student kidnappings in other states.
Toro stated that the Governor acted because of increasing national security fears, particularly the rise in school attacks.
He explained, “His Excellency, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has mandated that all schools close on or before Friday, November 28, 2025. This is strictly a precautionary step to protect the lives of our pupils, students, teachers, and school administrators.”
He clarified that the closure should not be a cause for alarm, calling it a preventive action to avoid any negative incidents.
He added, “Governor Inuwa Yahaya is totally dedicated to safeguarding Gombe State’s residents. We ask parents not to panic. The government is doing all it can to curb insecurity and ensure our children are secure.”
Toro also directed schools to complete all current exams within the next few days.
He specified, “Examinations must be held between today and Friday. Schools are required to finish all pending assessments before closing.”
He further revealed that a Taskforce Committee on School Revitalisation will soon begin a statewide evaluation of selected schools. He urged Education Secretaries to maintain current records for all schools in their care.
He said, “All Education Secretaries must ensure they have precise and current data on every school in their area. The taskforce committee will inspect specific schools to evaluate, analyze, and propose recommendations for their revival.”
Toro mentioned that this initiative is part of reforms aimed at enhancing basic education in Gombe.
He concluded that the assessment will help the government find shortcomings and reinforce school facilities so that schools are safe and suitable for learning upon reopening.
