Dr. Tony Nwaka, a former Delta State Commissioner for Education, claims that former governor Ifeanyi Okowa and others who criticized him for joining the All Progressives Congress over four years ago have since joined the same party.
In response to the recent defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Okowa, and other members of the state’s Peoples Democratic Party to the APC, Nwaka, who was a part of the government of previous Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, made this claim in a statement on Friday.
After he publicly campaigned for the APC ahead of the national elections in 2023, he remembers being made fun of and under pressure to quit.
“It was the only APC billboard that was visible on both sides of any road in Asaba, Delta State’s capital,” he claimed. That occurred before to the APC’s 2022 primary election, which was held in advance of the general elections in 2023. Its statement, “YOU KNOW ME, I KNOW YOU,” later became a standard line in lighthearted discussions. I had comparable billboards at Midwifery Junction, Cable Point, Ibusa Junction, the airport, and other places.
Prior to the 2022 primary election, they were the sole APC flags flying over the Asaba capital.
“Some people made fun of me!” Haha! “Look at Nwaka, he joined the APC,” “Nwaka has begun carrying a broom,” and “Is he not embarrassed?” The only APC banners in Asaba are on his billboards. “What have I missed? Some family members may even give me a call and ask, “My brother Tony, don’t you think you’ve made a major mistake? Kindly go back to PDP and take down those APC flags.
Even after losing the election and being passed over for appointments, Nwaka claimed he was unwavering in his resolve to stay in the APC in the face of criticism and even the removal of some of his campaign materials.
You can imagine my joy today, when I now drive around Asaba and see APC flags, banners, and billboards flying across every nook and cranny of the city. Is God not wonderful?” he asked.
Nwaka, who is also a former chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Area, urged politicians to remain focused even when they appear to be alone, saying the future is determined by divine purpose, not popular opinion.
