Using Daniel Dubois’ stoppage victory over Fabio Wardley on Saturday night as the backdrop for a critical evaluation of his forthcoming opponent’s chin, Tyson Fury has questioned Anthony Joshua’s capacity to absorb powerful blows.
The day after Dubois kept the WBO heavyweight title by stopping Wardley in the eleventh round in Manchester, Fury took to Instagram to draw attention to what he called a “telling pattern” in the opponent’s record.
“Well, after Dubois’ incredible fight last night, I’ve just been sitting here thinking,” Fury remarked.
“Dubois battled and stopped “Big Baby” Miller, but he never defeated him. He then engaged in combat with Hrgovic, stopping him but never defeating him. Last night, he engaged in an incredible battle with Wardley, stopping him and never letting him down. He never defeated Usyk despite hitting him with some powerful bombs.
Nevertheless, he engages in combat with Anthony Joshua and knocks him down five times. These are the facts, not that Anthony Joshua lacks chin. Take it as you will and as you like. No one else ever went over. Not just one individual, such as “Big Baby” Miller, Hrgovic, Usyk, or Wardley, but Joshua falls down five times. “Chinny!”
In their IBF heavyweight title match in September 2024, Dubois stopped the British-Nigerian fighter in the fifth round after knocking him down five times. Fury’s claim was based on the difference between his performances against Miller, Hrgovic, Usyk, and now Wardley, none of whom were floored.
The highly anticipated all-British bout between Fury and Joshua is scheduled for later this year and is projected to occur in the fourth quarter of 2026. But the fight won’t be official until Joshua wins his warm-up match against Kristian Prenga in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on July 25. The Fury fight won’t happen if Joshua loses against the Albanian, who has won 20 of his 21 fights, all within the distance, according to promoters Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren.
