Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo has stated that the Federal Government cannot intervene to control the rising costs of airfare tickets because the aviation sector operates under a deregulated model. Keyamo explained during a monitored interview on Arise Television that the government lacks the authority to set prices for private businesses, including those within the aviation industry, effectively limiting its ability to address the recent surge in ticket prices. This explanation comes after the Senate summoned both Keyamo and other important industry figures to discuss the significant and rapid increase in domestic air travel costs, which has caused widespread public dissatisfaction. Adding to this perspective, Dr. Alex Nwuba, the President of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Nigeria (AOPAN), suggested that the fare hikes are a consequence of market demand and also function as a way to offset the discounted prices offered during less busy travel periods.
