Haruna Maigari, the Speaker of the Auyo Legislative Council, has been suspended by the Jigawa State House of Assembly due to alleged anti-party activities.
Following the approval of a motion by Lawan Dansure, the majority leader of the House, the suspension was declared during plenary on Tuesday in Dutse, the state capital.
The Assembly claims that the action was taken in response to claims that Maigari’s actions were harmful to the cohesiveness and unity of the state’s ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC
Dansure, who made the motion, argued that anti-party actions at the local level could weaken the party’s position ahead of upcoming elections and urged lawmakers to support disciplinary actions against the council speaker.
He stated that it was the House’s duty to uphold party discipline and maintain the stability of the APC in Jigawa State.
The motion was unanimously approved by the members after discussion.
Following that, Speaker of the House Haruna Dangyatin declared that Maigari would be suspended immediately pending additional investigation.
During the meeting, Dangyatin announced, “Hon. Haruna Maigari is hereby suspended as Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council over alleged anti-party activities.”
Additionally, the Speaker established an investigative committee to look into the claims and report back within two weeks.
He stated that the committee would ascertain the relevant facts and, if needed, suggest additional action.
In order to maintain legislative operations, Dangyatin further ordered the suspended council speaker to promptly transfer all official documents and duties to the Auyo Legislative Council Deputy Speaker.
Following the party’s recent primary elections, some APC members in the state were reportedly subject to disciplinary actions, which coincided with the suspension.
