Public commentator Mahdi Shehu criticized the Federal Government’s explanation regarding the release of dozens of abducted church members, calling the official account unbelievable and insulting. Reacting to a presidential aide, Shehu stated the narrative was illogical and treated citizens as unintelligent, asking, “When will they stop taking Nigerians for granted and insulting our collective intelligence?”
Shehu ridiculed the claim that security agencies merely contacted the abductors to secure a rapid release. He offered several sarcastic alternative explanations, suggesting the abductors might have acted due to: the upcoming Christmas or New Year holidays; a desire to show charity; appreciation for Saint Lucia and Brazil carnivals; waiting for the ransom to be included as a line item in the 2026 budget; or hoping the release would earn them a ministerial slot or presidential amnesty, along with 37 Hilux vehicles.
Shehu concluded by asserting that the explanations offered so far lack the seriousness needed to address Nigeria’s growing insecurity, questioning the credibility of the entire rescue narrative.
