Mulikat Abiola, a former legislator who represented Ifelodun State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, has officially joined the race for the APC governorship ticket for the August 8, 2026 election.
The APC has scheduled its governorship primary for December 13, with at least seven aspirants, including Abiola, having already bought nomination forms.
Other contestants include former APC National Secretary Senator Iyiola Omisore, former Deputy Governor Benedict Alabi, immediate past NIWA Managing Director Bola Oyebamiji, and Lagos-based engineer Dideolu Falobi.
Abiola, who served in the Osun Assembly from 2018 to 2023, is currently the only female aspirant to have purchased the party’s nomination form.
Speaking to reporters in Osogbo on Thursday after getting the form, Abiola said she is running because women are constantly marginalized in Nigerian politics.
She emphasized the need to increase political awareness and participation of women in leadership roles.
She stated that she obtained the APC governorship nomination form to show her readiness to contest the upcoming election, asserting that Osun belongs to everyone and is not just for a few. She declared that it is time for a female governor to lead the state and that she is determined to give women their rightful place in governance.
Abiola stressed her dedication to restoring political representation for women and empowering citizens, adding that the prior announcements of other aspirants do not deter her. She expressed confidence in her ability to win both the party primary and the governorship election in August 2026.
