The National Association of Nigerian Students’ Taraba state chapter has voiced displeasure with the state’s Gassol local government council for the protracted delay in the construction of the Namnai Bridge.
After significant rainfall in August 2024, the bridge—which the organization regarded as essential to the state’s transportation and economic activities—collapsed.
Bolyo Saleh, the association’s chairman, sent a press release on Monday in which the student body called the situation “disheartening” and said that despite the project’s strategic importance to locals and commuters, especially students, there has been no discernible progress.
NANS claims that the bridge’s absence still poses significant safety risks, interfering with academic activities and impeding socioeconomic growth in areas that depend largely on the route.
The association went on to criticize the “lack of interim solutions,” pointing out that no temporary or local solutions have been implemented to lessen the difficulties encountered by road users. It said that many people are now at risk of harm and needless hardships as a result of the ongoing neglect.
He stated, “NANS called on the North East Development Commission (NEDC), contractors, and other pertinent government agencies to provide clear explanations regarding the delay.”
The group also wanted to know if money had been set aside for the project, how it had been used, and why there weren’t any other options.
The student body also asked for a specific start and finish date building the bridge, emphasizing that the current state of affairs shows a lack of dedication to the welfare of people, particularly students.
The statement stated, “NANS Taraba State Axis will not remain silent while the safety and future of our students are put at risk.” If the issues are not resolved quickly, the association may take legal and drastic action.
The group called on authorities to take urgent action, stressing the necessity of responsibility, openness, and quick action to address the problem.
