The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to curbing online fraud and fostering trust in digital businesses.
Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), explained that fraudulent activities have negatively impacted Nigeria’s reputation globally. Speaking at a press conference unveiling the National Digital Trustmark, a federal initiative, he said the program is designed to provide a verifiable certification or trust badge for e-commerce and other online platforms in Nigeria.
The initiative aims to protect consumers, block criminal activities, and deter internet fraudsters, also known as Yahoo boys, who have significantly harmed the country’s image. Abdullahi noted that some foreign actors, including from China, exploit Nigerian and African IP addresses to commit online crimes, making it appear as though the crimes originate from Africa.
Through partnerships with organizations such as the German International Cooperation Agency and the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), the government aims to strengthen consumer confidence, promote fair competition, and elevate Nigerian businesses to global standards.
Abdullahi explained that the National Digital Trustmark will allow citizens to differentiate authentic websites from clone or fraudulent ones, giving every company, e-commerce platform, business, and government organization a visible trust seal on their sites.
The NITDA boss also highlighted the media’s role in rebranding Nigeria internationally and stressed that cybercrime challenges are often complex, with some perpetrators not even being Nigerians. He noted that Nigeria ranks among the top five countries on the Cybercrime Index alongside Ukraine, Russia, China, and the US, emphasizing that digital advancement comes with challenges that must be addressed collaboratively.
Abdullahi concluded by underscoring the importance of partnerships between the government, private sector, and international organizations to build a trustworthy and secure digital ecosystem.
