Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, has his condolences to the people of Iwo in the wake of the disastrous flood that occurred in the town on Friday following several hours of intense rain.
Adeleke bemoaned the significant personal losses that the inhabitants had experienced and promised that his administration would step up efforts to protect people and property from future occurrences of this kind.
The governor promised that, in addition to previous interventions, resources had already been deployed to improve waterways in Iwo and surrounding communities in a statement released Monday in Osogbo by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.
“After hours of intense rain, Iwo experienced floods on Friday, causing enormous damage. I am heartbroken to hear about this.
“I can only imagine the toll on our people in Iwo, and the scale of the losses suffered by our people as a result of the natural disaster is particularly heavy,” he said.
The governor went on to say that his government would assess the damage and offer the impacted parties the necessary assistance.
“I would like to express my sincere condolences to all those impacted in whatever manner on behalf of the State Government. “As a government, we support the people of Iwo during this trying time and promise to help them overcome the obstacles caused by the incident,” Adeleke stated.
He clarified that his administration had started flood protection measures before the most recent disaster, which included dredging the Aiba canals to enhance water flow and prevent floods.
To make sure that this terrible catastrophe doesn’t happen again, the government has mobilized resources for the channelization of more rivers in the wake of the incident,” he said.
Adeleke also revealed that he had given the Environment Commissioner instructions to carry out an immediate evaluation and provide long-term fixes for the flooding in Iwo and the surrounding area.
Additionally, he urged Osun State citizens to support government initiatives by abstaining from careless trash disposal in waterways.
