Nigeria’s security forces have been accused by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of selectively making arrests in relation to the recent tragedy in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area, Benue State.
The party’s Benue State chapter spoke out against what it called a biased approach to justice in a statement released on Wednesday, claiming that the current probe has mainly targeted people suspected of being PDP sympathizers.
The party pointed out that the killings, which left many people homeless and took numerous lives, had kept the community’s sense of unease and terror high. It further claimed that law enforcement’s response was biased and driven by politics.
“We categorically denounce the selective arrests being made by security forces in connection with the Yelwata atrocity.
“Justice, not political witch-hunts, is what the victims and their families deserve,” the statement said.
The PDP also urged security personnel to behave impartially and professionally, cautioning that selective application of the law may exacerbate political tensions and further undermine public trust in government agencies.
“Regardless of the political connections of the actual criminals, security agencies should concentrate on catching them. The party went on to say that justice must not only be carried out but also be perceived as such.
