The Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has publicly criticized the Federal Government over reports that Super Eagles players are owed allowances, calling the situation evidence of a “now disgraced country.”
Obi’s reaction was prompted by issues surrounding the team’s preparations, including concerns raised by midfielder Alex Iwobi, who shared a video reportedly showing the poor state of the team’s accommodation in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff.
In a statement released on X on Tuesday, Obi called it “truly unfortunate” that the players, who consistently represent the nation, are denied their entitlements while the government continuously spends lavishly on “needless political patronage.”
He lamented that the neglect of national athletes delivers a detrimental message to Nigerian youth—that hard work and service are not rewarded. Obi stressed that those who serve Nigeria “deserve to be paid promptly and treated with respect.” He concluded by urging the authorities to “do better” and prioritize the welfare of the nation’s representatives.
