The Conference of Past Legislative Council Leaders (CPLCL) has separated itself from alleged efforts by leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to prevent Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, from switching to the party.
The association, which comprises former lawmakers from various political parties, issued a statement on Sunday clarifying its stance. It noted that its attention was drawn to a public announcement by a specific group, the Immediate Past Councillors Forum of Plateau State, led by one Hon. John Dashe, which falsely claimed that the CPLCL had approved the rejection of Mutfwang’s rumored plan to join the APC.
In the statement jointly signed by Rt. Hon. Damar Yaksun, Rt. Hon. Fom Wash Toma, and Hon. Eng. Samuel Azi, all of whom are former leaders of the Legislative arms for Qua’anpan, Barkin Ladi, and Jos East, it was asserted that they were neither consulted nor did they offer any form of support for the actions taken.
The group stated: “We wish to unambiguously distance ourselves from the aforementioned press conference where they joined other APC factions to oppose Governor Mutfwang’s potential entry into the APC.”
“We are taking this step for the following reasons: The press conference was held without proper consultation with our members and therefore does not represent the shared opinion of our organization.
“The press conference does not reflect the core objectives of our association, even by a simple majority, and did not follow the appropriate procedures for making such a decision.
“As an association of respected politicians who operate at the local level, we function collaboratively, not independently, with the main goal of connecting our constituents to opportunities that improve their lives while promoting the principles of our respected party, the APC.
“As a forward-thinking party in West Africa, the APC’s position and focus are on welcoming more interested individuals into its membership for social growth and development.
“In conclusion, we believe it is the right time for all Nigerians to unite. By standing together, we can overcome the instability that threatens our collective survival as a nation.
“We strongly believe that our great party, the APC, acts as the unifying body that brings us all together. We are proud to be involved in this movement,” the group concluded.
