The former Head of State of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), urged the new, factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki, to reconstruct the party, rectify its past errors, and establish it as a force for stability in Nigeria leading up to the 2027 general elections.
IBB gave this directive when Turaki and a select group of members from the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) paid a formal visit to him at his Hilltop residence in Minna, the capital of Niger State.
The discussions during the meeting reportedly focused on the revitalization of the party, the stability of the nation, and the necessity for stronger political organizations nationwide.
The former military president commended the party leadership for showing solidarity with the government and people of Niger State during what he characterized as one of their “most challenging” periods, while reconfirming the extensive national presence of the PDP.
In his opinion, the PDP remains the most structurally established political body in the country. He recalled his own unsuccessful attempt in the past to formalize a two-party system, which was resisted by the political class.
Babangida encouraged Turaki to prioritize diplomacy, comprehensive consultation, and inclusive leadership as he starts the process of rebuilding the party.
He said: “In your earlier remarks, you admitted that the party made errors and has already implemented procedures to correct them. I urge you to employ diplomacy, seek out people’s opinions, and work toward creating a harmonious and progressive party. You possess the ability to accomplish this, and I wish you success.”
To highlight the lasting impact of political party organizations in Nigeria, the former Head of State recounted a story about a military administrator he once appointed in Niger State. This administrator encountered a resident who was unaware that a military government was in charge and insisted that his allegiance was still with President Shehu Shagari and the then-governing NPN.
Babangida stated that this event demonstrated how deeply political parties are integrated into the community’s consciousness.
In response, Turaki expressed thanks for Babangida’s continued encouragement and guidance, asserting that the PDP would continue to draw from his leadership experience and historical understanding of Nigeria’s political development.
He stated, “We are dedicated to reforming this party, strengthening its components, and bringing back its winning momentum before 2027.”
He also mentioned that the delegation had originally intended a visit to specifically express gratitude to Babangida, but the recent kidnappings in Niger State made it necessary to combine the courtesy call with a visit to offer condolences.
