Vice President Kashim Shettima of Nigeria has called on followers, leaders, and candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC, to abstain from divisive politics.
In a statement on Wednesday, Shettima urged everyone to practice moderation and preserve party unity as political negotiations for the 2027 general elections get underway.
In a message headlined “2027: Don’t Pull Down the Roof,” the vice president compared the APC to a family that shouldn’t demolish its own home due to internal aspirations.
He emphasizes that consultations have started in wards, local governments, party offices, and private residences, claiming that the political season brings with it the traditional fever of democracy.
“It’s election season once more. The roof doesn’t need to be taken down. We should all abstain from harmful politics.
“The marketplace of ambition is alive again, supporters are counting delegates, elders are being visited, and candidates are making calls.
This demonstrates the vitality of our democracy. It is proof that power in our republic is still something that must be gained, negotiated, battled, and persuaded. However, there are temptations associated with every political season.
