Problems That Affected the Power Industry in 2025

Inadequate supply, liquidity issues, and aging infrastructures have continued to plague Nigeria’s power sector. In 2025, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) experienced a new leadership crisis that resulted in the appointment of four people as chairmen.Additionally, the nation was on the verge of a complete blackout due to power plant owners threatening to shut down due to federal government debt of N4 trillion and the first impasse between a state energy regulator and an electrical distribution business (DisCo).In April, the Association of Power Generation Companies (GenCos) threatened to cease operations due to an N4 trillion debt that the federal government owed them. In a statement, Col. Sani Bello (rtd), Chairman, BOT of Power Generation Companies, stated that the current state of the power industry, which has seen GenCos brought to their knees in payment settlement for services they render to the sector despite keeping their promise to expand their operations, was the reason for the threat.
