Deeply concerned by a series of road accidents that claimed 38 lives in just four days, residents of Jigawa State are demanding the reinstatement of a strict transport policy from former Governor Sule Lamido’s administration. These fatalities occurred in three separate incidents across the Ringim and Dutse local government areas, including a 22-person tragedy involving a wedding party and an 11-person crash caused by speeding and overloading. While acknowledging the state’s good road infrastructure, locals blame human error—specifically reckless driving, excessive speed, and the dangerous practice of cramming up to twelve passengers into a single sedan—for the frequent carnage.
Community members highlighted that under the previous Lamido policy, commercial vehicles were limited to just four passengers, a measure they believe significantly improved safety. Residents are now calling on the FRSC, the police, and the state government to enforce stricter traffic laws, punish violators, and curb the irresponsible loading of both heavy goods and people. They also urged passengers to refuse travel in overloaded vehicles to help prevent further loss of life.
