The Rivers State Government voiced worry about the increasing number of child trafficking, abuse of minors, and unregulated surrogacy practices within the state.
The state government promised to introduce new laws to stop this rising trend.
The Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, stated this during a meeting with a delegation from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), led by Ikediashi Nwamaka, Assistant Director of Intelligence, Rivers State Command.
Anabraba commended NAPTIP’s continuous efforts to protect vulnerable people across the state, but noted that recent information from certain orphanages and care homes was troubling.
He said the Government is greatly concerned about cases of child trafficking, the exploitation of underage girls in “baby factory” activities, and the lack of proper rules for surrogacy agreements in the state.
He assured the delegation that the State Government is already taking action to resolve these problems.
Anabraba stated that the Government is developing new legislation intended to protect women and children and put an end to the illegal acts of individuals and institutions that exploit vulnerable populations.
