Rory McIlroy came to Shinnecock ready to battle the brutal winds and fast greens for a US Open title and departed Sunday a clearly beaten golfer.
McIlroy finished on six-over 286 after shooting his second three-over 73 of the weekend. “I think it won the battle over me at this point,” he remarked.
McIlroy, a six-time major champion from Northern Ireland and world number two, made five bogeys on Saturday’s back nine and four more on Sunday’s final round.I’ll definitely regret yesterday’s back nine when I look back on the entire week,” he remarked. “After nine, I managed to get two under par for the competition.
“After that, the wheels came off and a terrible back nine was played. At that point, I kind of shot myself out of the competition. I was obviously somewhat disappointed after last night’s course.”
McIlroy was rushing for the exits after making three bogeys in his first five holes on Sunday.After a few bogeys on the front nine, McIlroy said, “I was just trying to race my way to the 18th green. You try to come out here today positive and you try to muster the energy to put a good one in there.”
He will travel to Europe before returning home for the British Open in July.
“It’s my favorite time of the year to go back home and play, play the Open and I get to spend a bit of time back there,” McIlroy stated.The way the golf course began to play over the weekend was not all that different from an Open Championship, but it will be wonderful to play some links golf in the coming weeks.”
