Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency specialist and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, has stated that Bello Turji, a known bandit leader, made the claimed decision to surrender and accept peace out of survival rather than sincere remorse.
Makama made this statement in response to a recently made public video in which Turji said he was willing to give up his weapons and accept peace.
The video, which gained widespread attention over the weekend, has sparked conjecture among the public about Turji’s apparent change of heart.
However, Makama stated in a post on X on Monday that the action was a calculated choice made in response to Turji’s operational weakness rather than an act of regret.
“Turji is not giving up his weapons because he has developed a sudden love for peace.” He is acting in this manner due to a significant deterioration in his operational capabilities,” Makama stated.
He pointed out that Turji’s choice came after the passing of Danbokolo, his chief operational commander, who was slain during a recent joint operation between the State Security Services and the Hybrid Forces, a local security unit that includes members of the Civilian Joint Task Force.
Makama asserts that the primary driver of Turji’s brutal activities, such as ambushes, raids, and executions, was Danbokolo. Turji’s network apparently quickly fell apart after his passing, leaving him exposed.
Turji served more as a spokesperson. Danbokolo took care of the labor-intensive tasks. Turji’s swagger vanished along with Danbokolo, according to a security source.
According to sources, the government is currently debating how to respond to Turji’s surrender offer.
According to reports, security forces are keeping a careful eye on the situation and are reviewing his possible disarming.
Experts have cautioned that Turki’s surrender by itself won’t put an end to banditry in the Northwest of Nigeria, where a number of other armed organizations are still active, despite the news.Given the extent of the crimes connected to Turji and his organization in the area, it is still unclear if the government will award him amnesty.
