The potential salary increases for President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, senators, and ministers have been alluded to by the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission, or RMAFC.
Mohammed Shehu, the chairman of the RMAFC, revealed this and claimed that their present pay was unsustainable and unattainable.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Shehu claimed that despite an increase in responsibilities and financial difficulties, the current pay structure has not changed since 2008.
“With a population of over 200 million, you cannot pay the President of Nigeria N1.5 million a month and expect it to be taken seriously,” he said.
“The DG or a CBN governor is paid ten times as much as the president. That is simply incorrect. Or you give him [the agency chief] twenty times the attorney general of the federation’s salary. That is completely incorrect.
The Nigeria Labour Congress, or NLC, has, however, denounced this action and cautioned against raising politicians’ salaries.NLC emphasized that when the typical Nigerian faces poverty and inflation, it would be unfair for politicians to benefit from pay increases.
