The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, is the leader of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), which has voiced serious concerns about the rising level of insecurity in the nation and warned that Nigerians are beginning to doubt the government’s capacity to safeguard people and property.
JNI denounced the recent murders of Muslim wedding guests in Plateau State as well as other violent incidents across the country in a statement signed by Professor Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, its secretary-general.
According to the statement, “the Federal Government should be perceived as being proactive on security matters.”
“Citizens are becoming more and more agitated, especially with the Mangu carnages. Flashpoints are known, and nothing seems to be done.”
JNI accused security agencies of repeated intelligence failures and said the government must go beyond mere condemnations.
It urged the prosecution of perpetrators of past attacks, especially those responsible for the Plateau incident, to restore public confidence.
It is concerning that Boko Haram continues to kill, kidnap, and resurface. The group also stated that the government must take meaningful action rather than only forming committees.
The Islamic organization also urged civil society and legal organizations to pursue justice for the dead and requested that the Plateau State Government replace the burned bus that was transporting the victims, which belonged to Ahmadu Bello University.
JNI also called for immediate government action on other violent attacks, such as those in Benue and other regions of the nation, in addition to the Plateau massacres.
